Thought for today.

So teach us to number our days,
That we may gain a heart of wisdom.

Psalm 90:12

As we trust God to give us wisdom for today’s decisions, He will lead us a step at a time into what He wants us to be doing in the future.

Theodore Epp

We used to sing a song "One step at a time Lord Jesus, one step at a time." Let us keep in step with the Lord today.

Thought for today.

Moses. Raised and educated in Pharaoh’s court as a young noble but afraid to lead, afraid to speak. He had good excuses. He stuttered. He had a violent past. He had been abandoned by his mother as a baby.

But then he saw God in a burning bush. One by one his excuses were stripped away. His doubts and questions were answered as only God can answer. And he, a refugee far from home, was sent with a message from God.

You’ve been sent too. With a message from God. No excuses. Are you ready to say yes?

Dear God, I want to be willing to heed Your call. Show me what You would have me do to share Your love with the world. Amen.

Thought for today.

Oh, sing to the Lord a new song!
Sing to the Lord, all the earth.
Sing to the Lord, bless His name;
Proclaim the good news of His salvation from day to day.

Psalm 96:1–

A Classic Devotional from St. Augustine

Sing to the Lord a new song; his praise is in the assembly of the saints. We are urged to sing a new song to the Lord, as new men who have learned a new song. A song is a thing of joy; more profoundly, it is a thing of love. Anyone, therefore, who has learned to love the new life, has learned to sing a new song, and the new song reminds us of our new life.
The new man, the new song, the new covenant, all belong to the one kingdom of God, and so the new man will sing a new song and will belong to the new covenant.

Lord, You have given me a blessed new life. May my every word and action be a song of praise to You. Amen.

Thought for today.

God has wisely kept us in the dark concerning future events and reserved for himself the knowledge of them that he may train us up in a dependence upon himself and a continued readiness for every event.

Matthew Henry

Children can be impulsive and often want everything "now!" (So can grown ups!) It is the wise parent who does not give in to every demand, but rather keeps some things on hold until the time is right.

God deals with us the same way. He makes every good thing available to His children—but only in the right time. As our Father, He loves to prepare His us for all that He has for us to know and enjoy. But out of fatherly wisdom, He trains us to trust Him—even when we want something right now—so that we will become mature, Christ-like adults, who are better able to appreciate and enjoy His blessings. He also keeps us from greedy self-centeredness by answering some of our requests with a firm, “no.”

To try and move ahead of God's perfect plan for us is to deny Him the privilege of teaching us and watching us grow to be like Him.

Father, God, how grateful I am for the good things you have brought into my life, but even more so, for the blessing of Your hand of guidance. Help me to wait for You. Amen.

Commit your works to the Lord,
And your thoughts will be established.

DAILY QUOTE

God has a great race for you to run. Under His care, you'll go where you've never been and serve in ways you've never dreamed. But you have to release your burdens.

Thought for today.

God tells us that He will bear our burdens, making our yoke easy. It is a promise to His children. But in order to experience His rest, we must first give our burdens over to Him. We do that through prayer, confessing that we cannot carry the weight of life without Him. He wants to bear our burdens for us and make our load light. There will be many people in our lives who will offer to carry our burdens. And while they can share in our pain and suffering—and while often God uses others as a means of His grace—people really cannot carry our burdens for us. Only Christ can lift the load.

Father, what a blessing it is to know that Your love for us is so great that You have promised not only to lighten our load, but to lift it, bearing it for us. How humbly thankful we are to You for the grace and mercy You offer us. Amen.

DAILY THOUGHT

Years ago several artists were asked to illustrate the calm in a storm. One that stood out depicted a raging storm at sea near some jagged mountainous rocks. Nestled in one of the rocks’ crevasses was a bird peacefully resting, seemingly unaware of the storm’s lashes from the tossing sea or the wind that caused the water to spray high above. God wants us to know the same kind of peace: when the storms of life assail us, we are to be sitting still, perfectly peaceful, trusting that the eye of the storm will move on by and that we will be safe in the arms of Jesus.

Jesus, You are our refuge in the time of storm. Help us to recognize that and allow You to be our protector, bringing Your peace to us. Amen.

There is a wonderful law of nature that the
Three things we crave most – happiness, freedom,
And peace of mind – are always attained
By giving them to someone else.
