BIBLE STUDY WEEK IN THE BEATITUDES of MATTHEW 5

DAY ONE: Christ's Sermon on the Mount, verses 1-2.

Verse 1. And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him.

Verse 2. Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying:

The Beatitudes have been called many things, but one title stands out, “the foundation principles of the Kingdom of Heaven.” Many of the Beatitudes have close Old Testament parallels. Jesus, however, unites them into one united Christian character.
Do you know what kind of people Christians should be?
Would you know the character to which Christians should aim at?
Would you know the outward walk, and inward spirit which becomes a follower of Christ the Lord?
If you want to know, we need to study the Sermon on the Mount.
We are going to look at the “EIGHTFOLD” character of a Christian, and the EIGHT fold blessings attached to that character. None will find happiness in this world or the next, who do not seek it from Christ the Lord. I pray YOU can stay with us over the next nine days!

Verse One.
“And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him.”

“He went up.”
This was probably in order to avoid the crowds, and to find a quiet opportunity for teaching His disciples. From the larger circle of the multitude, came the inner circle of Jesus disciples. We need to draw aside to Jesus.

“And when He was seated.”
When He had sat or seated Himself. “Sitting” was the usual posture of an eastern teacher. Often Jesus “sat” to tell His followers of the “Kingdom of Heaven.” Today, preachers stand and the people sit. Is it to tire him out first?
Why did Jesus teach His disciples? Because, He said:
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because:
He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the broken-hearted.”
“To proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord” Luke 4:18-21.

Verse Two.
“Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying.”

After He sat down. Here is a serious way of exciting the hearer’s attention, and preparing them for something good. Jesus spoke as from the chair of authority, and His hearers gathered at His feet, as Mary did. Someone said; “Now was opened the richest fountain of instruction which had ever flowed for the good of mankind. He, who had before time opened the mouths of the prophets, now opened His own mouth.”
